2009 NFL Mock Draft

First I want to give a big shout out to Walterfootball.com who has included my mock drafts on his draft database. A big thanks to Walter who runs a super site, with all kinds of information and whose site made this 2009 Mock Draft all that more achievable. Now, I came about this order by random selection (names in a hat folks). As with all my Mock Drafts it isn't the order of what I think the player is valued at, but also about what I think that team will do with that selection.

2009 NFL Mock Draft
Round One

1. New York Jets-CJ Spiller, RB, Clemson
The Jets will be frustrated at the lack of running game they are receiving from Thomas Jones and the others and will go with the versatile Spiller
2. Seattle Seahwaks-Tim Tebow, QB, Florida
Matt Hasselback isn't getting any younger and so they take Teabow who is just too attractive to them at this spot.
3. New York Giants-Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland
The Giants have Buress, but Toomer is getting up in age and Steve Smith may not recover fully from his injury so they go for giving Eli a number two receiver.
4. Oakland Raiders-Chris Wells, RB, Ohio St
Yes, they have Fargas, Rhodes and Jordan but they are all getting younger and have their own seperate issues. Kiffkin will go for a young back he can mold himself.
5. Buffalo Bills-Ryan Clady, OT, Boise St
The Bills need a dominate tackle to protect their quarterback and open holes for Marshawn Lynch, Clady (if he waits till 2009) will be that guy.
6. Arizona Cardinals-Felix Jones, RB, Arkansas
An early front runner for the Heisman after he no longer has to sit behind McFadden, Wisenhunt would snatch him up to replace Edge in a heart beat
7. New England Patriots-Brandon Flowers, CB, Virginia Tech
They just continue to reload in the secondary and take the top corner on the board. Fili Moala or Rolle are also options here
8. San Francisco 49ers-Jaison Williams, WR, Oregon
Alex Smith parties heavily this night as he finally gets a weapon who isn't a tight end from Maryland
9. Washington Redskins-Fili Moala, DT, USC
The Redskins have this "strong" defense, but who is their defensive tackles? They have decent players but no earth movers, that's what Moala is.
10. Denver Broncos-Myrone Rolle, SS, Florida St
John Lynch isn't getting any younger and needs an eventual successor, Rolle can do that and fill the whole of the Hall of Famer Lynch.
11. Minnesota Vikings-Hunter Cantwell, QB, Louisville
Even if they go with the Derek Anderson route, they're gonna want someone behind Anderson learning from him. Rumor has it Cantwell will be phenomenal once Brohm is gone, so we'll see
12. Houston Texans-Taylor Mays, SS, USC
We know the Texans like spending first round draft picks on defensive players, so they upgrade their secondary and put an assassin back there
13. Miami Dolphins-Vernon Gholston, DE, Ohio St
By this time, Jason Taylor very well may no longer be a part of the Dolphins organization. Someone needs to replace him and Gholston just appears to me the kind of player the Dolphins would covet.
14. Dallas Cowboys-Earl Bennett, WR, Vanderbilt
They have TO and some decent receivers for Tony Romo, but they need TO's eventual replacement so they take the best receiver still on the board. Don't rule out trading up to take Heyward-Bey.
15. Chicago Bears-Nic Harris, FS, Oklahoma
The biggest problem on their defense is the fact that their defensive secondary cannot stay healthy. They struck gold with Tommie Harris, they go back to the Boomer Sooners trying again.
16. Jacksonville Jaguars-Jeffrey Fitzgerald, DE/OLB, Virginia
The Jaguars love upgrading their defense, and why not they play the Colts twice a year. Fiztgerald could be a big time play maker for their defense
17. Detroit Lions-Nate Longshore, QB, Cal
We all know about Cal quarterbacks, so it'll be interesting if Matt Millen, yes he'll still be there, goes for this quarterback. It's the this or maybe Eric VandenHeuvel
18. Pittsburgh Steelers-Darry Beckwith, OLB, LSU
The Steelers don't rebuild, they reload. They could also go for VandenHeuvel, but Darry Beckwith may be too tempting for a defensive coach like Tomlin to pass up.
19. Cleveland Browns-DeMarcus Granger, DT, Oklahoma
I may cry if the Browns haven't helped their defensive line by this point, especially in the middle. Then again, Granger is a giant cork in the middle and even though he's a Sooner I'd love to have him
20. Philadelphia Eagles-CJ Gable, RB, USC
Westbrook cannot stay healthy, and he's not getting any younger. In comes Gable from USC to learn from the vet and eventually take his place in the Eagles backfield.
21. Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Eric VandenHeuvel, OT, Wisconsin
We keep hearing about this kid in the previous picks and here he is. Now he could turn in a great combine and jump into the top five with Joe Thomas comparisons, but for now we'll keep him here.
22. Indianapolis Colts-Erin Henderson, OLB, Maryland
This gives the Colts a true game breaker in their linebacker corps. He will be all over the field since the one thing Maryland does produce well is linebackers
23. Kansas City Chiefs-Jerod Mayo, ILB, Tennessee
If they keep Donnie Edwards after this year, they'll need a replacement for him the following year. Mayo could step in, not as good as Edwards but has the potential to be
24. St Louis Rams-Demonte' Bolden, DT, Tennessee
The Rams are always in need of defensive help so they take the best defensive player left on their board. Bolden smells bust for me, but this is about the place he'd be taken.
25. New Orleans Saints-Michael Hamlin, SS, Clemson
The Saints will continue to upgrade their defense to stop the Cowboys, who they'll likely feud with these next couple years. It is this over a wide receiver since there is none worth taking at this slot
26. Cincinnati Bengals-Terrance Taylor, DT, Michigan
We have seen how abysmal the Bengals' D has been this year, Taylor is their attempt to rectify that situation with a run stopper who is a wide load and takes pressure of the middle linebackers.
27. Tennessee Titans-Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
Year two of drafting a wide receiver in the first round, then again they need wide receivers like I need hair. They reach into Texas for this weapon for Vince Young
28. Carolina Panthers-Mike Goodson, RB, Texas A&M
The Panthers have had a patch work running back corps for a few years now, I think this is the year they try to get a dominate number one running back for whoever their QB is
29. Green Bay Packers-Doug Worthington, OLB, Ohio St
They struck gold with AJ Hawk so they go back to the well with Ohio St, especially since their defense is becoming one of the best in the NFL
30. San Diego Chargers-DeMario Pressley, DT, NC State
This far down in the draft, the Chargers lack few positions. The thing the Chargers lack is coaching and sadly they get it here so I go with Pressley who will clog that middle in the AFC West
31. Baltimore Ravens-Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida
Ray Lewis is getting closer and closer to retirement and they're gonna need someone to replace him. They go back to the state of Florida and take Spikes, not related to Taeko
32. Atlanta Falcons-Myron Parker, DT, Kentucky
The Falcons just let go of Grady Jackson, so they're gonna need to find a replacement. If they don't find one in this year's draft, they'll need to find one in this draft, and I think Parker is a good fit for them.

The next 2009 Mock Draft will be ordered by an average of last year's record and my predicted record.

I dunno man, Teabow could go 1.....NYJ have no QB this year or next. I dont buy that Kellen Clemons is the next star QB

CJ Spiller could easily fall into Seattles lap however. Alexander is proving to us all that he is a fluke and average RB

Flowers in NE is scary. Especially since NE CB's are getting old. He coudl fit right into that system

SF and Williams- Yes please!!! But the last time we drafted a WR in the top 10 we got stuck with JJ Stokes. Think we need to look outside the Pac-10

Redskins dont deserve Moala. But he would improve that injury plagued line

Rolle to Denver. Id be a bit more a Denver fan. Sorry bro, gotta support the Rolle liniage

Cantwell??? Lets see how he fares as a full time QB before we make a bold prediction like this.

Bennett to the Cowboys would be PERFECT timing. I predict Owens will be gone as Terry Glenn. Crayton and Bennett could be the next Ocho Cinco and TJ combo

Bears and Harris- Hmmm problem with that is Harris wouldnt start right away. Good call though

Longshore and Detroit. Lions fans love Kitna, I dont know how this marriage could work. Kitna has a few more good years left in him

Cleveland and Granger- Go figure =)

Henderson and Indy- Well, the Panthers drafted players SOLELY to contain Michael Vick. This strategy could be true with pass defenders to stop Brady and gang. Strickly a post-season draftee

Not to bad of a prediction though. You pretty much filled immediate needs for each team. This of course if we all had Nostradamus powers.

For Vincent, just in case you missed it (which I don't believe you did since you deleted your comment) the rankings were done randomly.

I can't see 1st Team All American WR Crabtree dropping so far. I would be shocked if probable top 10 drafting teams like STL, SF, MIN, ATL, MIA or the Jets would pass on a Blue Chip stud like Crabtree.

This is true, but this list is very outdated and was made during October before Crabtree's season was complete. This also assumes Crabtree comes out next year as well. No worries, once we know who actually is coming and who is going THIS year, this draft will be updated.
