Goodbye, Dougie

In a bit of a surprise move, the Red Sox released veteran catcher Doug Mirabelli yesterday, the only man seeminly capable of catching Tim Wakefield's knuckleball. I've been a big Mirabelli fan for years, so I'm a bit sad to see him go. He was a legit power threat for a back-up catcher before 2006 (30+ HRs, 101 RBI in 615 ABs for the Sox in his first 3.5 years as a backup), but he'd been on a steady decline for a while. Still, if you're an avid NESN viewer, you probably recall the typical Mirabelli at-bat: look at the first two pitches, swing late at the heat, and then smack a double or even launch one just when you'd gone to the kitchen for a beer. I'm going to miss him, but we'll see how Kevin Cash does with Wakefield. And I wouldn't count Dougie out yet. The last time the Sox tried to get rid of him, his replacement lasted 93 days and a total of five Wakefield starts. Mirabelli was then quickly back in Boston, escorted from Logan to Fenway at 110 m.p.h. by the Boston police in the only known occasion when the Big Dig actually helped the city of Boston.
Addendum: Dews has informed me that I forgot this. My apologies.

There is something so insanely funny about that damn diary when he's standing in front of a mirror buck-nekkid yelling "DOUGIE'S GOING DEEP TONIGHT!"...

I hate the Sox, but damnit that is freakin hilarious...

I always like Doug. I was sad when the Giants let him go.
