The 1000th Post!

It's been two days in the making, trying to decide what exactly we should do for our 1000th post. Well, ideas were thrown around, virgins sacrificed, the black blood of the temple of doom drank, but we finally came up with our plan. We present to you, on this very momentous day, our all time favorite baseball players...as well with our most hated baseball players. The rules were simple, a lineup with a full starting five pitchers, three bench players and a closer. It was interesting to see that SayHey is really an A's fan deep down in his heart, but I suppose Giant fans have reason to hate the same folks as we do.

Ahhhh Carlos Beltran. Good call!

I cant hate Robin Ventura, He did lose the fight. Hating him is like kicking a man when he is down after getting his ass kicked by a 45 year old man on WGN. Oh...

Dews said...

Totally forgot about Ventura, but after that incident, I don't really have anything else to hate him for.

I kinda think its funny that a lot of my favorites are listed on people's hated :)

I was really really close to having Edgar Martinez instead of Baines, and thought about Orel because of his hitting (and obviously pitching) prowess in the playoffs...

Jack Gonzo, MD said...

I wanted to hate Orel, but like Lasorda and Dibble, I respect him too much to hate him

SayHey Kid said...

Fuck Orel.

Gonzo- For the record, I never hated the A's. My brother and dad were A's fans growing up so I watched both teams play.

In fact, my dad was a HUGE HUGE Carney Lansford fan. I kinda adopted that love from him.

SayHey Kid said...

I do have a love/hate for Lasorda. He happened to be one hell of a good manager while manager my most hated team.

I find it funny that you like Rob Dibble and hate Norm Charlton though. Same team bra', same team!

Jack Gonzo, MD said...

Yes, same team, but Dibble is hilarious and wasn't the guy who also played for the Mariners

Dews said...

Charlton had a chance to suck it up for the O's for a bit too.

Just not as badly as some other relievers we've overpaid (Danny Baez anyone?).

SayHey Kid said...

I loved watching Dibble pitch (Even in the 1990 World Series). Even when he was a Brewer.

Damnit, I meant to add Eric Davis to the list of hate

Dews said...

Eric Davis????

What do you have against Eric Davis?

SayHey Kid said...

I am shocked Dews didnt add Jeffery Maier to his list of hate. Yankee fan would put him as the "extra Outfielder"

Dews said...

That fucker will get whats coming to him....

SayHey Kid said...

I dont know, but i never liked him. Even as a Giant I didnt like him.

Oh, I think it was that BS catch in the 1990 World Series. I forgot which game it was but it took the wind out of the Athletics sail (A's got swept that series)

SayHey Kid said...

Maier is a scout in Milwaukee now. I guess that could be bad?

Dews said...

I am well aware of where Maier is...

Like I said, he'll get his...

Jack Gonzo, MD said...

pft...you all act like you know what REAL hate is. Ask Browns fans about John Elway, now THAT is real hate

Dews said...

What, Browns fans can't find John Elway???

Seriously guys, do your job and get it finished already, he can't be that hard to find...

SayHey Kid said...

I cant compare your hate to Dews. The Brown's let themselves down while a fan stole the game from the O's.

To tough to measure.

Dewey, Cheatem, & Howe said...

Jim Rice = HoF

Dews said...

yea, same day as Joey "Albert" Belle!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA!!!

May as well try a write-in campaign for Mike "He really wasn't that bad in Left" Greenwell.

Jack Gonzo, MD said...

Maier is only half to blame, the umps blew the call.

We're not legally allowed near the Denver area where he lives.

Then again, we could talk about the other hatred, where the O's folks hate Angelos, which is nothing for what we feel towards Modell.

Dewey, Cheatem, & Howe said...

Have the O's rid themselves of Belle's contract, or does that come off the books next year?

Dews said...

We shedded that a few years ago, plus we had insurance on it anyway, so didn't have to pay the whole amount.

How much is Schilling costing you guys to sit on his ass and bitch about things he doesn't understand?

For that matter, has Len Bias's contract "expired" (catchy eh?) yet for either the Celtics or Adidas?

SayHey Kid said...

Jim Rice = Over--Rated!

SayHey Kid said...

Joey Belle's contract officially expired in 2006 I believe

Its tough for me to knock Schilling (And I HATE him so much) but he has 3 rings.

Im sure Boston is still paying Reggie Lewis's contract as well.

Dewey, Cheatem, & Howe said...

The Len Bias thing is legitimately not funny.

I hate Schilling. I wasn't a fan before he came to the Sox, and I sure as shit started hating him again when he started campaigning for Bush immediately after the 2004 World Series. I'd throw him under a duckboat if I could.

Dewey, Cheatem, & Howe said...

Wow guys, two fairly classless statements in mere minutes. I mean, I can understand Dews hating the Sox and Boston, but I don't know what he has against two guys who died tragically. As for SayHey...I just don't get it at all. His hatred makes no sense at all to me.

SayHey Kid said...

Good call.

He was a piece of shit to me when he started bashing Barry Bonds then covering his own ass by ducking out of the Congressional Hearing.

Dews said...

It was a low-blow, but I'm tired of Albert Belle contract jokes when every team has had their albatross contract.

If you actually stack Rice and Belle up though, career wise, they are the same person.

SayHey Kid said...

The Reggie Lewis thing was bad taste, I know.

My hatred for Curt Schilling started when he was a Diamondback. He blogged a shitload of nonsence about how he hated Barry Bonds and the Giants. Needless to say, he was a piece of shit well before he came to Boston

SayHey Kid said...

Well, Belle's career was cut short so technically they should have been better than Jim Rice.

Oh, and living in the Bay Area as a kid and watching the A's constantly slaughter the Red Sox in the post-season is why Jim Rice is over-rated. He played dead the entire time, putting up bullshit stats. And people out their still consider him a God.

Just because the Red Sox havent had a Hall of Famer since Yaz (Fisk doesnt count since he went in as a Whitesox) doesnt give you the right to spatter this crap talk about how any Red Sox player should be in the Hall.

Dewey, Cheatem, & Howe said...

Yeah, Schilling put the douche in douchebag, for sure. Most Red Sox fans I know acknowledge that as well. I think most take the position that they'll root for him when he pitches for us, but secretly hope that when he leaves the Sox he develops some sort of strange, penis-rotting disease that leaves him a eunich.

SayHey Kid said...

Yeh, as a Giants fan we put Barry Zito on that same peg. Sure he hasnt won us a series, but he certainly isnt helping us get one.

Dewey, Cheatem, & Howe said...

And by constantly you meant twice, both sweeps, in 1988 and 1990, of which Rice only played in the 1988 series.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Jack Gonzo, MD said...

I don't think Bias actually had a chance to sign a contract

SayHey Kid said...

Fair enough, but if ya want to split hairs then where was he in 86? He was invisible!

Dewey, Cheatem, & Howe said...

Also, we have Boggs. He was going to go in as a Devil Ray, but the Hall got wind of a financial arrangment he and the Devil Rays had about his cap selection. He's enshrined as a Red Sock now.

SayHey Kid said...

Jim Rice career post season stats:

18 Games
.225 AVG
2HR
7RBI
21 Strikeouts in 71 AB's

Hell, Even Barry Bonds did better than that and he is the definition of crappy post season superstar!

SayHey Kid said...

Good point. I always thought he went in as a Yankee but I stand corrected

You know I can never bad mouth Boggs.....well, except for the rogain hair. I liked him better as bald man!

Dewey, Cheatem, & Howe said...

It takes more than either killing it or sucking hard in the postseason to get into/not get into the Hall.

Dewey, Cheatem, & Howe said...

Rumor is he also "drank a few Miller Lites" on a trip from Logan to LAX.

I so want to know how many that was.

I think there's a book about baseball myths coming out. We should write about our favorite baseball myths at some point.

SayHey Kid said...

Trust me I know but other than a handful of good seasons, what has Rice done to deserve immortality?? MVP? Hell, Kevin Mitchell has an MVP.

SayHey Kid said...

I like that idea!! Half the book would include Cleveland Browns conspiracies

SayHey Kid said...

Cecil Fielder has an MVP and a World Series Ring. He is far from any Hall of Fame.

Jack Gonzo, MD said...

Jim Rice had batting titles though, and if we think Will Clark should be in, Jim Rice should be in

SayHey Kid said...

Jim Rice never had any batting title. 1 MVP, 8 All-stars, and 2 Silver Slugger awards. Thats it!

I never said Will Clark should be in the HOF. Clark was a leader in so many ways that were not statistically tied together. Not to say Clarks 2 Silver Slugger awards, 6 all-star appearances, 1 Gold Glove, and NLCS MVP didnt matter

Dews said...

If Jim Rice had just been nice to the media, we wouldn't be having this conversation because he'd be the slightly more deserving of the bottom wrung of HOFers (Bill Mazerowski being the top candidate of that club).

Dews said...

I don't think Will Clark should be in either though...

SayHey Kid said...

He could have been the nicest guy in the world to the media.

Doesnt change the fact that his stats are not HOF worthy. I cannot phatham the idea of his name being next to Ted Williams, Stan Musial, Ralph Kiner, Willie Stargell, and Carl Yaz as baseballs all time greatest Left Fields.

Oh, and soon to be HOFer....Rickey!

SayHey Kid said...

I dont think Will Clark should be in the HOF. For the record........Again!

Jack Gonzo, MD said...

1. I do think Will Clark should be in as he was probably the best first baseman in baseball for about a decade.
2. Numbers may not be Ted Williams good, but he was the best hitter in baseball during his prime and that has to count for something when everyone else's numbers are down.

Dews said...

Was gonna say, I don't think I've ever actually heard you say that SayHey.

But I'm also on the record for saying I don't expect the O's to be an exceptionally great team this year either, or even 500 (though I'd love that) just so we're clear :)

SayHey Kid said...

1. I agree to an extent. He was the best not because he hit homeruns; but because he was such a phenominal clubhouse leader and outstanding clutch hitter. His numbers compared to other 1st base HOF's are way down though.

2. He wasnt even the best hitter during the 80's. If anyone should be in the Hall for a Left Fielder it should be Andre Dawson or hell, even Dale Murphy. NOT Jim Rice!

Jack Gonzo, MD said...

1. Yes, but we have got to stop the notion that the first base is JUST a power position. Let's be honest some of those HoF first basemen would have been DH's in today's game.

2. Why the 80s, his best years were the late 70s. Look at how many triples he had...in Fenway Park no less, which is damn near impossible to do. Of course Dawson deserves to be in the HoF too.

SayHey Kid said...

1. I couldnt agree with you more! But the HOF is soley stat driven depending on your position. Clark's precense is not enough for Hall consideration (Unfortunatly) And you nailed one key thing, Clark ended his career where it started. At first base! To Hell with the DH!

2. He wasnt even a top 5 hitter in the late 70's. Paul Molitor, George Brett, Robin Young, Dave Winfield, Rod Carew, and Reggie Jackson (Just to name a few). Those are HOF players with HOF resumes.

I wouldnt even consider Jim Rice UNLESS Andre Dawson was already in the Hall. Dawson was a 5 tool athlete that was a unique athlete during the 80's. Rice, not so much!

Dewey, Cheatem, & Howe said...

This whole conversation just goes to show how messed up Hall of Fame voting is, especially after an era of huge, huge, huge offensive numbers. He came from an era where 400 HRs was huge, 500 rare, 600 legendary, and 700 was Ruthian. He hit 382 HRs, won an MVP (shoulda been two), was ROY, and, for his career, made the All-Star team more often than he didn't. If he could've hung on three more years, he'd have had 3,000 hits, and would've been a .300/3,000/400 guy. If he'd played 20 years instead of 14, he'd be an all-time great like, say, Musial. If the Sox had one in 1986, we wouldn't be having this conversation (yet another casualty of Bill Buckner). He's one of the best of his generation, just didn't play 20-25 seasons.

Dewey, Cheatem, & Howe said...

Molitor, Brett, Carew, and Jackson were great hitters. Winfield and Yount aren't even in that class. They got in by hitting magic numbers, not by being the best at what they did.

Dews said...

FOR SHAME!

A Red Sox fan STILL blaming Buckner???

You guys fell apart, it wasn't his fault... Blame the manager that didn't pull him for the defensive replacement that usually came in.

Hell, blame the manager for not bringing Clemens in to close out the game. There are SOOO many people you should be blaming before Bill Buckner. You bastards have done enough to him after his very respectable career!

SayHey Kid said...

Dont even get me started on Bill Buckner. Red Sox nation should be ashamed of themselves for how he was treated!!!

Dewey- You are correct, and just wait until the steroid generation of players start popping up on the HOF ballet. McGuire is just the tip of the iceburg.

I do call bullshit on the way voting goes as well. I remember Nolan Ryan was shy 1 vote for a Unanimous induction. The lone wolf reporter said "Nobody should be Unanimous ".

SayHey Kid said...

Robin Yount was a gold glover at 2 tough positions, won an MVP, won a World Series AND is in the 3000 Hit club. I doubt that is all luck!

Try again....

Dewey, Cheatem, & Howe said...

I'm not blaming Buckner for anything, just saying that if Rice could've been on the team that ended the Curse, he'd be a HoFer. Ending the Curse was huge, and it might elevate some borderline guys to HoF status (I'm looking directly at you, Curt "Lucky SOB" Schilling).

SayHey Kid said...

Please, Everybody in Red Sox Nation blammed Bill Buckner for losing the 1986 World Series.

What does suck is that Curt Schilling will make the HOF. All because of that stupid sock!

Dews said...

ok fair enough.

Curt Schilling gets in because of that ketchup on his foot, or what do they call it in Beantown? Bloody sock?

Dews said...

Damn, posted at exactly the same time... freakish...

Dewey, Cheatem, & Howe said...

But you cannot, and ought not, consider Robin Yount an all-time great hitter. He wasn't. He was a good player who happened to hang around long enough to get 3,000 hits. I don't think he compares well with his contemporary counterpart, Cal Ripken.

Also, Yount won MVPs at different positions, not gold gloves.

SayHey Kid said...

Blood vs Ketchup......That can go into the LSWTF.Com Sports Myth book!

Jack Gonzo, MD said...

Yount also played for 19 years, Rice for 14. Both played in the outfield.

Yount was a .285 hitter, 3142 hits and 3 all star games. His average amount of hits a season was 165.

Rice was a.298 hitter, 2452 hits and 8 all star games. His average amount of hits a season was 175.

Rice, in five less years also hit about a hundred more home runs.

Dewey, Cheatem, & Howe said...

SayHey - um, yes, we did, for good reason. And he threw out the first pitch on opening day this year. I think he's forgiven us. Will you?

SayHey Kid said...

I will agree with you as an all-time hitter; but he was a great hitter in the 70's and 80's none the less. And you cant just look at his stats. He was an outstanding multi-talented infielder and outfielder. A No brainer first ballot HOF. At least the sports writers got that one right

Dewey, Cheatem, & Howe said...

I was going to throw in Varitek as a guy who might get bumped to HoF status, but I'm afraid SayHey is going to light me on fire if I continue to be a Red Sox proponent.

SayHey Kid said...

Varitek is an outstanding catcher. Why wouldnt I consider him? He caught 4 no-hitters, won 2 World Series, and he is still rather young.

Id say in terms of talented Catchers; Him and Pudge have an outstanding shot of making the Hall.

SayHey Kid said...

Jack- Yount started his career at SS and won a Gold Glove there. Dont think of him as ONLY an Outfielder. As for the health, yes, being healthy is a huge part of making the Hall of Fame. Dont discount Yount's accomplishments just because Rice wasnt durable

Dews said...

I don't think Varitek is an "outstanding" catcher, otherwise they wouldn't have needed a second catcher for Wakefield.

The selling point for Varitek are teh 4 no-hitters, but he didn't start his career until age 26-27 I don't think?

He was part of the worst deal ever in the history of the Seattle Mariner Franchise though.

Pudge I think is definitely a hall of famer.

SayHey Kid said...

Varitek reminds me of Carlton Fisk and if Varitek can keep doing what he is doing, he is Hall worthy. As for not catching Knuckleballers, please......That shouldnt be a consideration for anything. Just gives Mirabeli a job one night a week.

Oh, and dont forget Mike Piazza. Easy first ballot!!

Dewey, Cheatem, & Howe said...

Varitek also played in the Little League WS, but did not win.

I'm not holding out much hope for Varitek, although he catches a great game. I'm going to be very angry when Posada gets in but Tek does not.

Looking forward to Tek's HoF managing career though :)

Jack Gonzo, MD said...

I was merely giving you an example of how Rice dwarfed Yount's numbers is all.

Here is another stat for you. When it comes to total base titles, Jim Rice won that title four times. So did Lou Gehrig, Chuck Klein and Dan Brouthers. Musial, Ted Williams, Babe, Cobb, Wagner, Hornsby and Hank have more total base titles, though A-Rod is currently tied with him.

Dews said...

Thats actually the most compelling argument I've heard for Rice.

That and he played in an era where On-Base didn't matter as much as being a "Run producer" that was allowed to strike out a lot.

SayHey Kid said...

"Dwarfed" is a very insulting label considering Yount is not a traditional "Power Hitter". He still had his fair share of HR's though.

Im sure if Rice could stay healthy things would be different, but ya know there has to be a 2nd place or runner up. Jim Rice is that runner up in just about every statistical category. Funny thing is, we will have this exact same argument once Frank Thomas is HOF eligable.

SayHey Kid said...

All of the Jim Rice arguments are based on "Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda, and Ifs"

My response is yes; but this is reality and not a dream world where Buckner makes the play, or Rice stayed healthy for 3 extra years, or Bucky Dent DIDNT hit the HR. Come on guys, just accept reality for what it is.

MoDews said...

Sorry guys been trying to put mine together all day but haven't been able to find the time.. Trying to figure out how a lot of people's "favorite" players are people they have never seen play before. Guess I need that concept explained to me.. its understandable to have a past player that you admire but to be your favorite even though he played 50-60 years ago? Not trying to knock anyone's list but I have guys like Brady Anderson on my list.. :)

Jack Gonzo, MD said...

I've watched all my guys play, cept Vida Blue but I've seen footage

SayHey Kid said...

I was alive during the 80's and watched them ALL play. Well, not Willie Mays but growing up in the bay area, ya see alot of old games, highlights, and random footage of the guy.

MoDews said...

Guess I'm mostly talking about Dews players.. :).. Ty Cobb.. Coolpapa Bell and Josh Gibson.. very few people have seen those two play

Dewey, Cheatem, & Howe said...

There's a great book called The Glory of Their Times that talks about some of my players, and the rest I've learned about by reading a bunch about baseball. I never saw them play, but I've also never actually seen most MLBers today, just what Sportscenter and the highlight shows put on.

Dews said...

I saw them play...

They were on my team in Earl Weaver Baseball 2...

Dews said...

At least Josh Gibson didn't use HGH like Brady...

Just pay no attention to who I have in LF....

SayHey Kid said...

Yeh, there were alot of great players that i liked but I felt this was a good way for me to reflect and think of the players I love in my generation. Its just a shame i couldnt add Yount, The "Oz", or Brett on my list.

I am, however, happy someone gave a negative shoutout to that prick, Vince Coleman.

MoDews said...

Haha guess I was wrong then :).. I mean Earl Weaver Baseball 2 was obviously one of the greatest baseball games ever..

MoDews said...

LF or on your bench :).. Isn't that Canseco guy a pitcher?

SayHey Kid said...

I respect Dews list; Gives the old great Negro Leaguers some recognition on our blog

Its just a shame there is little to no video footage of them actually playing.

MoDews said...

Like I said before I am not questioning there importance or how great they were.. just seems weird for them to be favorites if you didnt actually really know who they were or got to see (whether actually see or on T.V.) what they did when they played

Dews said...

Did you know that Coolpapa Bell was so fast that he was hit by his own line drive rounding second base?

Its true, I heard it somewhere...

Jack Gonzo, MD said...

Someone obviously has Bell mistaken for Rickey. Rickey has been the only player to throw himself a pitch

SayHey Kid said...

I agree with Jack. Tommy Lee Jones meant to say "Rickey" but stuttered and said "Cool papabell" by mistake

SayHey Kid said...

I do find it funny that anytime we talk about our favorite players, Dews first reaction is:

"Ty Cobb, greatest of all time...you know he killed a man" followed by statistics

Dews said...

Why shouldn't that count towards his greatness?

If he were still alive, I'd introduce him and Ms. Maier....
