Score One For Equality

California's Supreme Court today ruled that the same sex marriage ban was unconstitutional.

Words cannot express how proud I am right now of my home state and judges who read law more then let their personal beliefs override what is on the books. Sadly some bigots have already begun to push for an amendment banning same sex marriages.
A coalition of religious and social conservative groups is attempting to put a measure on the November ballot that would enshrine laws banning gay marriage in the state constitution.

The Secretary of State is expected to rule by the end of June whether the sponsors gathered enough signatures to qualify the marriage amendment, similar to ones enacted in 26 other states.

If voters pass the measure in November, it would overrule the court decision.
I just can't understand folks sometimes, they hate they have for things that are merely...different. They love to use religion and the bible, but then it gets into Old Testament and what it says and doesn't say which is followed and not followed yada yada yada.

California Supreme Court strikes down gay marriage ban

The opinion in In re Marriage Cases was released about a half hour ago. I haven't had time to read through it, but early on the Court announced its decision like this:
[W]e conclude that, under this state's Constitution, the constitutionally based right
to marry properly must be understood to encompass the core set of basic substantive legal rights and attributes traditionally associated with marriage that are so integral to an individual's liberty and personal autonomy that they may not be eliminated or abrogated by the Legislature or by the electorate through the statutory initiative process.

Marriage Cases at 6.

I suggest looking for excellent legal analysis here.
